Groove, Sing and Dance like a Teenybopper!

There are a gazillion things I love about the internet and finding songs long forgotten is one of them.

All thanks to imeem.com I’m able to search and listen to all my favourite pop hits from the 90’s and early years of 2000.

I still remember listening to these songs on the radio, on 98.7 fm, and pretending to be a pop star too…in the comfort of my room of course.

And then my dad decided to sign up for cable tv (which we pestered him to, saying the discovery channel would be oh-so-educational) which gave me access to mtv!

That spawned a whole new interest in not only the songs but the dance moves and I suppose, the fashion (which is, well, questionable. hurhur.).

Anyway, here are just some of the songs I found, a lot of which I still fondly remember the lyrics!

– Gotta Tell You, Samantha Mumba
– He Loves You Not, Dream
– Finally Found, Honeyz
– Waterfall, TLC
– Sway, Big Runga
– Torn, Natalie Imbruglia
– All Cried Out, Allure featuring 112
– When the Lights Go Out, 5ive
– Show Me Love, Robyn

A Lit Student watching Cartoons

Out of all the cartoons on Disney Channel (yes, I do have and watch Disney Channel), the one I enjoy the most is Phineas and Ferb.

To quickly run through the whole theme of the cartoon series, its basically about two stepbrothers (obviously Phineas and Ferb) on their summer vacation. Everyday, they would think of what to do and then build/construct/design outrageously impossible and over-the-top extraordinary inventions to help them achieve their goal for the day. Inevitably, they would annoy their sister Candace whose only goal seems to be to expose their unbelievable inventions to their mum. But, somehow or another, the inventions would disappear before their mum can get to see it. This is in part , most unintentionally, thanks to their undercover agent and pet platypus Perry  (a.k.a Agent P) and his enemy Dr. Doofensmirthz.

Ok, now that all the obligatory introductions are out of the way, here is one of the songs Dr. Doofensmirthz sings (one of many in every episode) that was particularly hilarious:

What I find so funny about it are the little quirky details – like the fact that Perry becomes unsuspectingly clasped to the seemingly harmless and ordinary looking chair, Dr. Doofensmirthz telling Perry “No Pressure”, how Perry effortlessly slides out of the clasp and picks up a musical programme sheet, how the round hat manages to stay/fits on Dr. Doofensmirthz’s cone-shaped head, how Perry claps at the end of the show and puts his arms back into the clasp, and the fact that Dr. Doofensmirthz has to pay his dancers at the end of his show (unfortunately, I couldn’t find a video on YouTube that captured this part).

I suppose I like how this cartoon is rather intelligent, in a sense, that compared to other cartoons  (popeye, road runner, power puff girls etc. etc.), this one has its almost grown-up jokes of irony and satire whilst others are just about fighting bad guys and well, more fighting of bad guys.

Heehee.

I’ll put up more when I do remember to find them on YouTube.

Looks like cartoons, even on Disney Channel, aren’t exactly for kids anymore.

the delicious taste of snail mail

Sms, instant messaging, email… let’s face it, with technology heavily ingrained in our everyday routine, we have been accustomed to the concept of having things happening in an instant.

The minute we click “send”, your client receives an email reply with all the necessary attachments. The minute we press enter, your friend receives details of a 21st birthday party and almost immediately replies with a “Yes, I’m going!”. The minute you click “confirm transfer”, $25.99 leaves your bank account and goes into the account of a blogshop owner.

But interestingly and oddly enough, the very last example exhibits how the fast pace of technology, or more specifically the Internet, collides with the archaic and traditional way of communication – that is the use of snail mail.

Take for example, (based on the humble experience of yours truly) an order of a year’s subscription of drool-worthy Aussie magazine Delicious from Amazon.com. With a few simple clicks of the mouse, the subscription was added to the basket, checked out and paid for. All this happened within a few minutes in December 2008.

But only today, on 28 January 2009, did the first magazine arrive at my doorstep and into my outstretched and excited arms (courtesy of my dad. Of course, like all mail, it ended up in the mailbox first.)

Personally, as much as it was painful waiting in eager anticipation for the magazine to reach sunny Singapore, it is a much welcomed feeling amidst all the constant bombardment of “Now! Now! Now!” and “I want to see it in 5 minutes.” It also reconnects (if I may use a technology related verb) us to the oft-forgotten trait of patience, something I’m very sure our parents had a lot more chances to cultivate than we do now.

In that period of time that that the waiting game took place, it also created a silent hype around that particular item we’ve been anxiously looking out for and ultimately, making us treasure it fully when its finally within our reach. Trust me on this one, I’ve already read the magazine twice and I still want to flip through its mouth-watering pages another time.

Well, now that I’ve given you a little lesson on life (and a blog post which has been long overdue), if you would so kindly excuse me, I’m going to feast my eyes (pun intended) on the luscious pictures of rib-eye steaks with wasabi butter and hotcakes with orange ricotta all over again.

Yum.

Move over Pasir Ris park…

because West Coast Park is about to take your place!

The only problem of course, as its name suggests, is its inaccessbility. Otherwise, the place has all the works – different sections of various playground equiptment, sprawling open fields, footpaths and wheelpaths and a cooling sea breeze. Of course, there’s the unmistakable “M” sign signaling burgers, fries and 70cents icecream.

For those of you who know me, you must be raising your eyebrows by now because the last place Kat would go to is a PARK. HA HA HA.

(Which I don’t deny.)

Ok, so the only reason why I went to West Coast Park is because there was a Sunday School outing in conjunction with Childrens’ Day and I, for those of you who do not know, am a Sunday School teacher! (:

After some songs, a sharing and feasting on all-things-unhealthy from Macs, the kids were set free and boy, did they run loose! I went to the Flying Fox section to help out because the seats were too high for the kids and it didn’t actually glide across all the way. So the poor teachers, namely myself, Fiona and later on Benny and Ai Cheng, had to brave the scorching sun (we were playing at 1:30 in the afternoon) to carry the kids onto the seat, push them, drag them across, get them off and get the next kid on. *phew*

After the kids decided it was too hot to carry on (finally!) we all ran for the shade for gulps of water and kids being kids, with their unidentifiable and insatiable source of energy, ran to the open fields for a game of catch and frisbee. Haha. Later we joined them for Dog and Bone and a really random game of relay where I ran my first dash in about 6 years.

Needless to say, I’m aching all over right now. But hey, it was fun and the kids were lovely.

Gosh. I might actually be changing my perception towards these little rascals.

Unwanted Overstayer

As much as I love absolutely love my house on the ground floor, I really could do without all the weird creatures that make its way in.

Most of the time the usually make their way out, and thats fine with me.

Unfortunately, a certain black and yellow striped gecko decided to come in and has yet to take its leave.

To make matters worse, its been hiding in my room.

Sigh.

SOMEONE GET IT OUT!!!!!
please?

Everythingismessedup.

Pardon the emo title. Haha. It’s not life that’s messed up. Rather, its my thoughts. This post is gonna be nothing but random babblings hence the title. Hurhurhur.

Work – Who do the clients think they are huh! causing delays and refusing to revise impossible timelines. Geez. And the minions at the bottom are the ones who have to do all the work while those on top are so eagerly nodding their heads in agreement to these ridiculous deadlines without standing up for their minions! *grumblegrumblegrumble*. Then again, we are their minions for a reason.

iPod – Whoever said 4gb of space was enough. I constantly forget to charge my iPod, much less have time to keep updating and changing songs and playlists. Why didn’t I buy the 8gb. *grumblegrumblegrumble* Then I could have gotten the pink one!

iTunes – Scrolling through my iTunes, and recently hearing “there’s nothing in your iTunes I want to listen to”, I think it’s about time I went CD shopping. Yup. I’m gonna do the right thing and contribute to the already bursting pockets of these rich and famous artistes. They need to eat too right?

Clothes – It’s not fun always having to shop for work-safe clothes (even if my office wear is kinda like smart casual) and I want funky tshirts to wear during photo shoot days (covered up with a nice cardi or casual blazer if I have to go into the office first)! I work in the creative industry right. So I should be cool. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. *ahem* Gimmie gimmie gimmie Johnny Cupcake and Threadless tees!

Mobile Phone – Dear all, this or “cellular phone” is the correct term for that annoying gadget you carry with you everywhere you go. Not “handphone”. (Ok. End of English class.) With an increasing workload, I think its high time I made the switch from red to green. I would very much like to be a loyal reds-supporter but I need the free incoming and extra smses lah. Besides, dad gets more discounts for cable tv so its a win-win situation! I probably should get a new phone too, since mine is a grand old dame of 5 years old!

Memories on the Mountains…

I actually just wanted to post “Avenue Q is open for booking!” but after watching the church camp photo video montage (mum requested to see it on our tv), I felt like sharing a little bit about the camp.

Even before the camp, God was already teaching me much, especially since I was in-charge of games (again) this year. During one of the committee meetings, I remember the committee members saying they wanted something more from the games this year, like a “structured experience” not just for the finale night game but also on Wednesday night, leading up to the must-have-without-fail fruit fair.

It seemed like a good and exciting idea at that time, but little did Jun Qiang and myself realise how much work we had gotten ourselves into.

I met up with Amanda one evening to discuss games and we sat at Starbucks for hours cracking our heads. How were we going to make the program seamlessly move into the game? How were we going to involve all the campers? Were they going to get the game? Were they even going to realise the game has started?

Thank God that by the end of the night, we did come up with something. By then, we were exhausted and a gallon of creative juices had been wrung dry.

The finale night planning was the worst. Busy schedules prevented the games committee (made up Jun Qiang, Amanda, Nat and myself) from really getting together and brain-storming. Things dragged on until we really started panicking two Sundays before the camp. I remember we had a meeting after church until 3pm and then met again at Jun Qiang’s house at 6.30pm. That meeting (including dinner of course) lasted way after 11pm. Once again, another exhausting and frustrating meeting, but at least we accomplished the basic storyline. Haha. And thanks to Jun Qiang, we all got sent home!

During the camp, all three games, including the indoor games on the second day, were each different learning experiences in itself.

For the indoor games, after a particular game, our super-competitive campers started a rather big dispute with regards to the rules of the game. I, honestly, was taken aback and quite confused as to how I should address the situation. But thank God for my other game com members who were a little less confused and more calm than me. We huddled together and came to an agreed solution that although didn’t appease everyone, allowed the games to carry on and everyone continued having fun.

The fruit fair game was the most trying for me. While planning, Amanda and I overlooked a lot of details that were never addressed even during the game itself. A lot of miscommunication, hiccups and a lack of foresight led to a very messy start, hasty changes during the game and a dramatic ending. I was at my wits end and very very very discouraged at how everything was turning out. While I was in my corner as the “banker”, I remember just wanting to cry.

But every time I wanted to, someone would show up at my “bank”, or a committee member would say that the campers are actually having fun and getting the game, or an encourager would appear with assuring words. Looking back, I realise perhaps how childish I was to let my emotions so easily overwhelm me when the situation really wasn’t that bad. I do take myself too seriously at times and tend to take the entire blame when something goes wrong. But when it all ended, I had even more encouraging words, thank yous and a hug from a friend.

The finale was well-worth all our time and effort. I wouldn’t say it went smoothly without a hitch (as again, there had to be so many last minute changes) but it was fun fun fun. Even though we always have a drama night at every church camp, I think we brought a little something this time, involving everyone from start to finish.

Most importantly, God touched my heart during the camp again. Besides the games, God made sure I had a lesson to learn from each day’s message. Being “Complete in Christ” took on a whole new meaning for me. And I thank God, it wasn’t just a “church camp high”, but a feeling that is still burning in my heart.

Though many things happened throughout the camp, I still want to go back to the mountains with its cold morning breeze, the cool serenity, God’s creation surrounding me, the clean crisp mountain air, the delicious scones and of course, the memories.

Next June, anyone?

Boundaries.

We all need them to get our lives into order and keep it in check.

Without them, everything will pretty much be in a mess, go haywire and fall apart.

Unfortunately, they’re extremely easy to set but extremely difficult to keep.

Most of the time we bend it, making the boundaries bigger or smaller, with the justification that one should be flexible.

Sometimes, its a good thing to expand our boundaries, but other times, we suffer the repercussion and consequences.

Sigh.

Some things just never change…

For example,
How Michele will be late and have to take a cab down to meet me.
How Gina will just let out a loud burp and an equally loud “excuse me”.
How the three of us will get lost.

Haha. Two days ago on Friday, I finally had a chance to meet up with michele and gina. Was so nice to be able to see them again. We were, sorta, “inseperable” in uni because we did a lot of similar modules, especially me and michele who only did 1 module that wasn’t the same, so people just assumed “if you want to find michele, just find gina or kat” etc. So it was kinda like a “reunion” of sorts. Haha.

Given that I’m supposed to be a food writer and never been to botak jones, they insisted that we have dinner there. The interesting thing is that none of us knew where exactly in ang mo kio the shop was. Haha. Our brilliant plan was just to meet at ang mo kio hub and find our way. Well. In the end we did. Haha. But that was after a few phone calls, a wrong bus ride and asking the bus uncle as well as a random stranger at the traffic light. Haha.

Since it was my first time at botak jones, I decided to get the fish and chips. The queue was long and tables mostly filled with people eating botak jones (plus a lot of raves about it from friends) so expectations were a little high. Unfortunately, despite my hunger, the fish and chips failed to impress. It was dry, hard and kinda tasteless. Thankfully the tartar sauce was nice (saved the day!), the fries were decent (thanks to the cajun spices) and the coleslaw was one-up from KFC’s. Michele’s cajun chicken was pretty good though, tender and flavourful. But otherwise, I think the quality and taste of the food wasn’t enough to justify its $6.50 price tag. I rather eat the western food at hougang central. Haha.

After eating, I (no surprises here) suggested dessert. Haha. You can’t blame me! I was totally unsatisfied with dinner! (Although, due to sheer hunger, I managed to finish all the fish) We decided to go back to ang mo kio hub but as you can guess, we had no idea how to. Haha. So we just walked to the nearest bus stop, whiled our time away while waiting for the bus by taking the usual silly shots, boarded the bus which (surprise surprise) took us one big round. Haha. But hey! We eventually got to our destination!

Dessert was at Anderson’s but the apple crumble kinda sucks and the scoops of ice cream are so tiny. Haha. Oh well. We left Anderson’s at 10:30pm with the intention of taking the bus home but me and michele just had so much to catch up on and talk about we ended up chatting for the next one and a half hours sitting down at some random staircase near the bus interchange. Haha. Some things never change. And I’m glad it didn’t.

I miss those two and it was really nice to see and hear how’s everyone doing. It’s also nice to be reminded of friends that you know will stick by you when you need a shoulder to lean on.

So now, I’ve been left with the task of making sure us three girls meet up on a regular basis.

Geez. Probably one of the hardest things to do!

Thanking God for the Little Little Things…

Most of the time, we take things for granted that we don’t realise it’s actually God at work.

Caught up with quite a few things to do, I couldn’t join the girls earlier at 2pm for the Sisters’ Retreat. I smsed Estee and she told me about worship and workshop happening later at 7:45pm. But by the time it got to around 5pm, I was just so “nua” and lazy to go all the way down to church (this is serious laziness speaking here, since church is just a straight bus and 15 minutes away). Then, we got a call from my cousin Dennis who said he was popping by. Hmm, I thought to myself, excuse not to go because I’ve got visitors!

Initially, they had only planned to stay for a while as they were due for dinner at home at 7:30pm. Interestingly, they decided to stay till my dad came home at around 7:15pm. And that’s when Dennis offered to send me down to church.

Honestly, if he hadn’t offered, I think I would have been perfectly contented to stay at home and justify it with some crappy reason. But thank God Dennis came because I had a good time with my two nieces (laughing our heads off at Mr. Bean and talking about Hannah Montana, Cory in the House, Zack and Cody, iCarly and the Jonas Brothers) and of course, the free ride down to church!

I also felt apprehensive about going for the sisters’ retreat but those worries were quelled the minute I got there. I haven’t been to YF for the longest time ever and was worried about not being able to talk with the younger sisters. Thankfully, Amanda was there and the younger sisters were so sweet, talkative, funny and friendly. Strangely enough, I felt like a big sister! Haha. Definitely not in terms of size though. :p

We had a good, albeit short, time worshipping God together with our beautiful voices, embarrassing ourselves while playing games and listening to Stephanie share during the workshop. She shared about emotions and how even Christians (and not just hormone-raging teenagers) have trouble controlling their emotions. I couldn’t agree more with her…
